Transport Minister Grant Shapps announced plans to assess Britain’s electric scooters

Transport Minister Grant Shapps announced plans to assess Britain’s electric scooters from next year to next month, while planning future transport areas will be extended from the original four to all regions across the country.

This could legalize shared skateboards such as Bolt and Bird, as well as fund the development of shared skateboarding. The Department for Transport’s latest news said the changes in assessment “could see shared skateboards on the UK on the road as early as June.”

The announcement was made at a Downing Street briefing on 9 May 2020, when the transport secretary wanted to tackle the UK’s transport structure. Public transport use has been at an all-time low due to historical and cultural reasons, and traffic blockades have made matters worse because of the outbreak, with more and more opportunities for bike travel and walking, and the government keen to keep people green, stay away from cars and expand transport options in order to eventually resume work.

The new plan could see electric scooters gain the right of the road they’d love to, while the government pushes for safer roads for cyclists and pedestrians. Currently, electric scooters are in a grey area, they are not governed by road law or sidewalk regulations, so they can only be used technically on private land.

The government has previously outlined that the assessment of electric scooters may take into account the minimum age of use, safety standards for electric scooters and insurance requirements for their use, as well as parking for shared scooters. All these measures come from the experience of electric scooters in other countries, where accidents and the dumping of motorcycles throughout the sidewalk have been a problem for the authorities.

Given the current situation, the electric scooter revolution is likely to be driven by private ownership, as many potential users are unlikely to want to use communal things for health reasons. “The West Midlands is proud to lead the future of transport, and I am pleased that the government has once again believed in us through this innovative electric scooter trial… We will also use this experiment to examine the current transportation challenges present edifus by the coronavirus pandemic and explore how to use electric scooters to address them. Andy Street, the mayor of the West Midlands, said.

Changes to the UK’s travel patterns will also boost walking and cycling, with an updated investment strategy to be proposed in the summer of 2020 and an extra 10 million pounds invested in the construction of 7,200 electric vehicle charging stations.
